LATISSE®, Revitalash®, and LiLash™ all contain some type of prostaglandin analog and these ingredients may promote eyelash growth. However only LATISSE®, with its main ingredient of bimatoprost, has been clinically tested and approved as a safe and effective eyelash growth treatment by the FDA.
Not listed are the several so called “natural, prostaglandin-free” products sold as eyelash growth enhancers. With the exception of Marini Lash at $160 a tube, they do have the advantage of a cost savings over the products we’ve compared above and they obviously would not cause prostaglandin related side effects. However, as with any product used in or around the eye, they have a risk for infection, irritation as well as allergic reaction to the ingredients and, there is no evidence that they work. Each product makes anecdotal success claims, but any of these testimonials may be merely a placebo effect. If you wish to avoid prostaglandin based products, you’d be better off spending your money on eyelash extensions.
Our Recommendation: LATISSE®
This site does carry for sale Revitalash and LiLash, and we will happily sell them to you. However because Latisse is FDA approved for effectiveness and safety, it is the treatment we recommend to give you those longer, fuller, darker, thicker eyelashes you’ve been looking for.
What to Expect when using LATISSE®
Your eyelashes will experience real measurable growth.
Isn’t that fantastic – an eyelash growth treatment that really works! Just like the woman in the photograph, you too can experience the longer, thicker, fuller and darker lashes provided (get ready for the disclaimer): You use genuine LATISSE® and abide by the easy to follow instructions. That’s it!
As the treatment progresses, you'll first begin to see changes in length. Then, gradually, you'll notice more thickness and darkness in your lashes. If you're satisfied with your results by week 8, don't stop there. Stick with the treatment. After week 16, you'll see the full effect of LATISSE® solution — and so will others. After that, you can talk to us or your doctor about ongoing use.
Risks and Side Effects
All of the prostaglandin based products have a risk for certain side effects. Bimatoprost was first tested and approved as an eye drop (called LUMIGAN®) to treat glaucoma. During the clinical trials for LUMIGAN® the most common side effects were eye redness, growth of eyelashes, and itchy eyes. In 1-3% of patients it was noted to cause darkening of eye color, eyelid skin and eyelashes.
In the LATISSE® clinical trials, the most common side effect was irritation and/or redness in 3.6% of the patients with darkening of the eyelid skin being less common. Because LATISSE® is not used in the eye; no darkening of eye color has been noted for LATISSE® patients.
.Be aware, there is no way to gauge the side effects for users of Revitalash and LiLash because they have not been clinically tested. If using either of those products, care must be taken to avoid eye infection because they do not have the sterile, FDA approved applicators that are provided with LATISSE®.
Even greater risks are to those who, (because LATISSE® has a prescription requirement) buy dangerous bimatoprost knockoffs (so called “generic” LATISSE®). These risky products are the cause of almost all of the side effect problems. Worst of all, in the same way we call any tissue a “Kleenex” or any photocopy a “Xerox”, people refer to these counterfeit knockoffs as “LATISSE®” which causes a great deal of confusion and misinformation.
